Cataract Assessments

If you are booking an appointment for a cataract assessment, even though there might be some wait time for the initial appointment, in most cases we can offer the surgery within a 2-week period following your consultation with Dr Black.

Following your consultation with Dr Black if you require surgery and are ready to book your procedure, we can make all the arrangements on the same day. This negates the need for you to return at a later date to complete your pre-operative counselling. Therefore, we strongly encourage you bring your diary with you to your appointment to facilitate the booking of your surgery. Dr Black performs all surgeries at the Kawana Private Hospital.

If you hold private hospital insurance, we suggest you check the details of your hospital insurance policy. You need to check you have no exclusions for eye surgery and whether your policy has an excess or co-payment obligation for day surgery. We can then provide you with informed financial consent regarding potential out-of-pocket expenses when you book for surgery.

On the day of your appointment for cataract assessment, in addition to your consultation a measurement of your eye is performed (referred to as a ‘biometry’). A biometry measures the anatomical characteristics of the eye which is required for cataract surgery. Therefore, if you’re a contact lens wearer, please advise the receptionist when making your appointment as you will need to remove your contact lenses prior to the appointment to obtain an accurate biometry. Depending on the type of contact lens you wear, you may need to remove the lens anything from 2 weeks to 1 month prior to your appointment.

If you have had previous laser surgery such as LASIK to reduce your dependence on spectacles, we will require your pre-operative information from the clinic where you had this procedure performed. You may be able to obtain this information prior to your appointment with Dr Black.

We will send you out an information pack prior to your cataract assessment with all the details for preparing for your appointment.
